  • Road toll Q&A
How are parking fees charged in Taiwan?
      • Roadside parking: Simply park the car in the parking space lines without paying in advance. The toll-collecting personnel will from time to time issue a billing invoice, which will be put underneath your windshield wiper. You only need to pay the invoice at any chain convenience store in Taiwan (note: for roadside parking, please drive backward into the parking space lines to avoid the right front side of your car from hitting the sidewalk. After parking on the roadside, please make sure there is no car coming from behind before opening the door on the driver’s side, and open the door in two stages to avoid hitting any motorcycle coming from behind).
      • Parking lot parking: There is a ticket gate at the entrance. Take a ticket first or use an EasyCard for entry. When leaving the parking lot, if you took a ticket, then go to an automatic payment machine for payment, and then take the paid ticket to the exit and insert it in the ticket collecting machine. If you used an EasyCard, then drive directly to the exit and sweep the card for an automatic payment (note: try to select a parking space close to the light and surveillance camera, and pay attention to the distance from the cars on both sides to avoid hitting the neighboring cars when opening the door).

      • Roadside red line area: According to the traffic regulations in Taiwan, parking or temporary parking is prohibited in the red line area 24 hours a day.

      • Roadside yellow line area: According to the traffic regulations in Taiwan, parking is prohibited in the yellow line area from 7am to 8pm; in the rest of the time only temporary parking is permitted, and the driver is not allowed to leave the driver’s seat. Pay attention to the requirement that the car body shall not cross the yellow line.

      • Roadside white line area: Parking is permitted in the white line area, but the car body shall not cross the white line. It is recommended that the car is parked inside the parking space.

How is the road toll in Taiwan charged?
      • Highway toll: The toll is charged at an average of NT$1.2 per kilometer, calculated by the electronic induction door. Tolls are charged only on odd-number north-south bound highways (National Highway No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5). You do not need to choose any particular lane or pay in cash. When you return the car, we will calculated the tolls and make the payment for you.
      • Bridge and tunnel tolls: No bridge or tunnel toll is charged for any bridge or tunnel on all roads in Taiwan.
Are the gas stations in Taiwan self serviced, and do they accept credit cards?
      • Most of the gas stations in Taiwan have staff services and accept VISA, MasterCard or cash. Some of the gas stations have self-service refueling areas, which only accept VISA or MasterCard.
      • Taiwan's most common fuels are 92 unleaded, 95 unleaded, 98 unleaded and diesel, and most cars use 95 unleaded gasoline or diesel, but you need to pay attention to the fuel type for you leased car. The prices are floating, with an average of about NT$22 to NT$34 per liter.

Odd numbers are north-south bound national highways (toll roads): National Highway No. 1 (Keelung to Kaohsiung), National Highway No. 3 (Keelung to Pingtung), and National Highway No. 5 (Taipei to Yilan). Even-numbers are east-west bound national highways (toll-free roads): National Highway No. 2 (Taoyuan Airport branch), National Highway No. 4 (Taichung surrounding branch), National Highway No. 6 (Wufeng to Puli), National Highway No. 8 (Tainan branch), and National Highway No. 10 (Kaohsiung branch), all of which are limited to vehicles with four or more wheels.

All kinds of vehicles are permitted, and special attention needs to be paid to light motorcycles and pedestrian crossing.

What should I do if at the intersection there is a continuously flashing yellow or red light?
      • In Taiwan, some traffic lights are de-activated in the middle of the night, but on the main line a yellow warning light will flash at the side of the road to remind passers-by to reduce the speed for the intersection ahead and make sure there is no vehicle coming before passing the intersection. At the side of a secondary line there is a flashing red warning light, and vehicles need to first stop and make sure there is no vehicle coming from the main line before passing.

Can I make a right turn if a red traffic light is on?
      • In Taiwan, a right turn is prohibited when the red light is on, and you need to wait till the green light or the right-turn light is on before making a right turn.
      • When you make a right turn, you need to pay attention whether there is any motorcycle coming near in the right rear direction, or any pedestrian crossing the road. Not making way for pedestrians is punishable by law.
  • Car pick-up and return Q&A
Where can I rent, pick up and return a car at the Taoyuan Airport?
      • After the arrival at the Taipei Taoyuan Airport and passing the immigration, you only need to call the service phone number on the order form and we will send a car and transport you to the office of Gharry Car Rental (Taoyuan Airport Office) in about 15 minutes for car pick-up. After the completion of the car checking, we will also provide a free shuttle service to the Taipei Taoyuan Airport or the High Speed Rail Taoyuan Station. An appointment in advance is required for this free service.
Where can I return the car in addition to the Taoyuan Airport?
      • When you book a car rental, you may choose to return the car at the Taipei Taoyuan Airport, Songshan Airport, Taichung Airport, Tainan Airport, or Kaohsiung International Airport. However, in these regions advance bookings are required and change of bookings are not accepted.

  • Car insurance Q&A
What kind of insurance do I have for a rental car?
      • Business car compulsory insurance, with the insurance coverage is as follows: (the actual claims and amounts from the insurance company shall prevail)

      • #The scope of the insurance coverage does not cover the driver’s body injury, disability or death from a single-car accident.
      • # The scope of this insurance coverage does not cover the driver of the car.

Do I need to buy car body insurance?
      • Limited car body damage insurance for a car-to-car collision: During the period covered, if the car is covered by a limited car body damage insurance for a car-to-car collision, Party B will not need to pay the cost of repair, but for the amount exceeding the insured amount or matters beyond the insurance claim, Party B is responsible for full compensation for the damage and repair.

      • Be entitled to subrogation services for dealing with the accident, and avoid accident-related litigation.

      • In the event of a breach of contract or any of the following circumstances, Party B still needs to be responsible for all the resulting losses.
      • 1. The damage is intentionally caused or instigated by the lessee or the driver.
      • 2. The damage is caused by the lessee or the driver due to drinking or taking contraband (illegal drugs) while driving the rental car.

Can I buy full car body insurance?
      • In Taiwan, insurance companies do not offer full car body insurance for short-term leased cars, and it is rather expensive in other countries as well.
      • If you need higher insurance coverage, you may consult your country's insurance companies, some of which offer overseas travel self-driving insurance. This kind of insurance is mainly for loss of property, and does not cover personal injury. For a self-driving tour, you need to buy an extra insurance policy for any extra spending on property damage. You also need to know what documents and insurance contents are required for an insurance claim. For details, please contact the Zurich Insurance for overseas travel short-term self-driving insurance.
  • Chauffeur Service Q&A
Do I need to hire a chauffeur for a chartered-car tour?
      • You need to confirm your flight number and travel itinerary, including detailed addresses of the starting place, destination and daily accommodation.
      • The number of people and the number of luggage are very important. You must accurately estimate the number of people and the luggage size and number.
      • You can directly go to the booking system on gharry.com.tw to get a quote and make a booking request. We will inform you to make a payment and complete the order after we confirm the car availability.

Can you offer me a few travel itineraries?
      • According to the law in Taiwan, the order belongs to the car rental company, which can hire a chauffeur for you, and offering travel itineraries and booking of accommodation and restaurants belongs to the travel agency business. If you need a travel agency for the booking and planning, you may consult with our business partners.
      • For individual travelers, we recommend that you arrange your own itinerary, and get to learn more about Taiwan in the planning of your itinerary.
What charges are covered in the quote for a chartered-car tour?
      • Our quote covers the car rental, chauffeur costs, gas, tolls, parking fees and chauffeur sleepover expenses.
      • You do not need to pay extra fees other than overtime car use or changes or additions to your itinerary or number of people or baggage.
Do I need to tip the chauffeur?
      • Chauffeurs hired by us on behalf of customers will not ask you for a tip. You may give a tip at your discretion as an affirmation of the chauffeur’s driving, and generally the chauffeur will not reject it.

Will extra charges be charged for more than how many hours a day?
      • For multiple-day car charter, it is 8 hours daily starting from the departure time. Overtime car and chauffeur charges will be levied after 8 hours.
      • For chauffeurs hired on behalf of customers, the daily duty time is up to 11 hours. The chauffeur needs to stop for 15 minutes for every 2 hours of continuous driving to avoid dangerous driving.
How do I judge the size of the car trunk?
      • The size of a 25-inch suitcase is about 43cm*64cm*32cm, or about 88 liters. That is, (43*64*32) / 1000=88 liters, based on the external measurements of the case. Luggage over 88 liters is considered large luggage.
      • You need to note that for some seven or nine seater cars, there is no luggage space after the limit on the passenger number is reached. For the trunk volume, please refer to the car specifications.
What are the car model and the chauffeur's contact phone number?
      • For a chartered-car tour/time-charter transportation, we adopt a car classification system and do not specify a specific car model. We will provide you with the best car according to your choice of car classification.
      • After the completion of the order, because of the daily car scheduling problem, we can only inform you of the car model, license plate number and contact telephone number a day before the start date specified in your order.
      • For some cars, there may be last-minute changes due to the previous customer’s flight delay or rental extension. If there is any change, we will immediately notify you of the new car model, license plate number and contact telephone number.
      • We retain the right to replace the car. Of course, we will provide a car of the same or a higher grade free of additional charge, and thank you for your understanding in this.
